Off the edge of a minor highway rests an estate grounds, wooden rail fencing around a large plot of land; the grasses are green, springy and healthy. Gravel lines the drive, a bit lengthy and off the beaten path, to stop at an aging but well kept two-story home.
Slightly behind and west of the house are two barns, both dark wood in color and roofed with black shingling. Horses and riders come and go, some saddled and others not, ready to take to the training rings, passing a round pen where, by the people gathered around, is not commonly in use this time of year. An indoor arena is not far from the larger of the stables, a peek inside showing Dressage markers. Just outside is fenced arena, simple but thick wire marking the rails where basic jumping fencing is set up around the inner circle, with a well beaten path into the dirt along the outer edge. |
Away from the arenas are paddocks, fenced with a white vinyl unlike the perimeter. Horses graze or laze away, some seeking attention from passers-by. In the larger of the paddocks is a low-sloping hill, dipping into a man-made ravine that requires a high step, or jump, to escape from.
Dotted around in the back are a few log jumps, as well as two combination types with and without water. The set is obviously training for Cross Country, and as you watch there is an instructor giving a rider tips as they walk about the track they've chosen, a youthful looking horse in tow. 262 words |
